Research Initiatives
UJ actively engages in research focused on drought-resistant plants and water conservation. For instance, studies on the molecular mechanisms associated with microbial biostimulant-mediated growth have explored how these treatments can enhance drought stress tolerance in maize plants. Such research contributes to the development of water-efficient agricultural practices and reflects the university's commitment to addressing water scarcity challenges.
Water-Wise Landscaping Principles
Implementing water-conscious planting involves several key practices:
- Selection of Indigenous and Drought-Tolerant Species: Choosing native plants that are adapted to local climatic conditions reduces the need for supplemental watering. Species such as Portulacaria afra (spekboom) and Searsia lancea (karee) are examples of South African plants known for their drought tolerance.
- Zoning Plants According to Water Needs: Grouping plants with similar water requirements allows for more efficient irrigation and reduces water waste.
- Use of Mulch: Applying mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and moderates soil temperature, all of which contribute to reduced water usage.
